Sadanori Okamura

Sadanori Okamura completed his Ph.D. at University of Tokyo in 1978. From 1991 to 2012, he served as Professor of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Tokyo, after serving as a resident astronomer at Kiso Observatory of the University. He was formerly Executive Vice President (2006-2009) and Director of the Todai Institutes of Advanced Study (2011-2012) of the University of Tokyo. After his retirement in March 2012, he moved to Hosei University and currently he is a Profesor of Department of Advanced Sciences. He was also the President of the Astronomical Society of Japan (2011-2012). He has been an associate member of the Science Council of Japan since 2005.

Previously, Professor Okamura was President of Commission 28 (Galaxies) (2000-2003), President of Division VIII (Galaxies and the Universe)(2006-2009), and a member of Special Nominating Committee (2006-2009) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). He was the Principal Investigator of Suprime-Cam, a prime-focus wide-field camera for the Subaru Telescope.

Research Interests:

Professor Okamura's principal research interests are in extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology, especially structure, evolution, and formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Most of his current research is related to high-redshift galaxies and environmental dependence of galaxy evolution. He is also interested in astronomical image processing systems.
